How Do The crystals form?
Selenite & Satin Spar are the same mineral – A form of Gypsum – HOWEVER they crystallize differently which forms either Selenite OR Satin Spar. Commonly referred to as SELENITE is actually SATIN SPAR. They are different forms of the same mineral but have the same properties.
GYPSUM is an evaporite mineral most commonly found in layered sedimentary deposits.
Selenite forms as a result of an accumulation of minerals from evaporated saltwater. Over time the water builds up, then evaporates, leaves behind a layer of minerals, and then the process repeats.
Evaporate rocks are formed when bodies of water, evaporate leaving behind chemicals & minerals that were dissolved in them. All lakes, rivers, oceans, and ground water have elemental chemicals & minerals in them.
FUN FACT: Salt is a well known evaporate mineral. The Great Salt Lake is the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere and the 8th largest terminal lake in the world. It is located in the state of Utah. The lake is slowly shrinking in size due to evaporation. As the water evaporates the lake can no longer hold the same amount of salt.
